Distance-Learning Opportunities
The Burinkan currently has three active distance-learning opportunities for students:
Is this right for me?
There are several types of people this program has been valuable for:
1. Local students who enjoy having the supplemental practice opportunity
Some of the students that take our in-school classes enjoy having these videos as a reference for their own practice outside of class time, rather than attempting to rely on their memory or notebook to re-create the lessons from class. Access to class recordings is helpful for both solo and partner-based practice sessions outside of the school.
2. Remote students looking to learn and periodically have hands on skill-development and certification opportunities
Students living in locations too remote to make attending in-school classes possible are enjoying learning via live and recorded classes and then traveling to our school periodically, or hosting our instructor to their location for skill-development training, hands-on refinement and testing for certification.
3. Remote students looking to supplement their education, having no desire to certify
Some of our students are merely curious or looking to learn more about our traditions without receiving any feedback, refinement, skill-development, or certification. Some are of different lineages of the same art, curious for more information, while others are simply researching similarities and differences among martial traditions of different cultures.

Frequently-Asked Questions:
Question: Are the classes live or recorded?
Answer: Courses are initially delivered live, however every class is recorded as a reference for the live participants, those who could not attend live due to scheduling conflicts, and for those who start after the course commences. Each class recording is indexed with minute-markers to make specific topics in each class easily referenced. We start new courses once or twice a year, but do not currently have plans to re-deliver courses already recorded. If you meet the pre-requisites for a new course, you can join it live from the start and enjoy the benefit of immediate feedback on your progress without the additional cost of private lessons.
Question: If I enroll via class recordings, how can I get feedback on my progress?
Answer: You have two methods for receiving feedback on your progress: 1) you can use the course's Facebook group to post your progress and questions and receive feedback from your senior brothers and sisters in the art, and/or 2) you can set up a private lesson with the instructor. Cost is $50USD (or 2 ECs) for a private 30-minute lesson with the instructor.
Question: If I miss a live class, can I just join the next live class?
Answer: If you miss a live class, you need to review and train using the class recording of the class you missed before joining the next live class.
Question: What are these "Educational Credits (ECs)"?
Answer: If you join our Patreon, in addition to exclusive content, you'll earn Educational Credits each month to spend on educational opportunities including live or recorded classes, live workshops @ the Burinkan, or private Zoom lessons. Check out our Patreon page for details.
Question: How do I redeem these "Educational Credits (ECs)"?
Answer: Simply drop us a message when you are ready to spend a credit on a class, workshop, or private lesson and we'll do the rest.
Question: Can I just pick classes a la carte from the courses?
Answer: No, each class must be taken in order as the courses are carefully curated to be progressive, each class building on what was delivered in the prior class.
Question: Can I take part in multiple courses at the same time?
Answer: Absolutely, and many of our participants do. Of course, you'll have to train extra hard to make progress in multiple traditions at once, but it can be done if you dedicate the time necessary and put in the work.
Question: This seems like a big commitment. Do you have anything smaller?
Answer: In reality, the Distance Learning program requires no up-front commitment and can be approached on your own schedule using the class recordings. Each class can be registered for individually. There is no commitment to finish, however if you would like to try something smaller, consider one of our Short Courses.
Question: Are there any sales or discounts?
Answer: We have ran sales in the past, but prefer to offer additional classes or short courses to those bulk registering for classes. If you bulk register for 6 or more classes, we will throw in an extra class or two, a free private lesson, or short course. If we forget, just remind us.
Question: What are the testing fees?
Answer: We currently do not charge testing fees as we incorporate testing during our weekend workshops. That may change at some point in the future if testing begins to interfere with our ability to focus on teaching and we have to set up separate grading opportunities.
Question: What does testing/ranking/certification look like in this program?
Answer: If you are interested in certification within a martial tradition we offer, it is important to understand that each tradition has its own unique approach to ranking and certification. There is no universal system, and the process, timeline, and total cost varies based on the methods and values of the tradition itself. See the distance-learning page for each art for more details.
That said, certification should not be the primary goal of training. Our focus is on the acquisition of knowledge, skill, and a deep understanding of the tradition. Those who prioritize certification over genuine learning and practice are unlikely to do well in our programs. The best way to progress is through dedicated study, regular training, and an earnest commitment to the art. While we are deeply-committed to creating the next generation of instructors, we will not do so by reducing our standards.
All certifications are conducted in person. This means that students must either attend our workshops or arrange for our instructors to visit their location. Even with the effort required to attend a certification event, there is no guarantee of passing. Certification must be earned through demonstrated ability and understanding, not simply by participation.
